The latest roundup of check ups...

For those following along at home, Jacob has a lot of friends (specialists) that we visit periodically. In the last few weeks we have had an audiology appt (hearing screen), a renal ultrasound, a GI appt, and an eye exam.

EARS: Check!

The hearing screen is something that is recommended yearly-ish for children with Down syndrome when they are young. When Jacob was a baby it took four (yes four) sequentially more sophisticated hearing tests to finally determine that he could hear fine. He has shown no signs of fluid in the ears, ear infections, or other contributing factors that would impact his hearing but it has been a year (as of last fall - yes we are a little late) since the last hearing test so .....well, we finally got around to doing it.

If you are wondering what a hearing test for a 21 month old looks like, be assured it is super fancy and a stunning demonstration of advanced technology. Picture Jacob sitting on his Dad's lap in a chair in the middle of a room with speakers on either side. A sound comes out of one speaker or the other, Jacob turns his head to look and a cartoon appears. That's it folks.

Soooooooooooo.... safe to say the accuracy of said hearing test is -oh- about the equivalent of the length of the attention span of a 21 month old. Surprisingly, Jacob didn't look at the correct speaker consistently toward the end of the test.

Just picture the look on Dad's face when the technician explained to him that Jacob didn't seem to be 'hearing' the tones at the end of the test but he did great at the beginning. No! Really? Long story short, Dad insisted on a few more tests and the technician seemed satisfied that Jacob can hear ok but we should do a 6 month follow up next time. Righto.

KIDNEYS: Check!

Why the renal ultrasound????? Last year Jacob had kidney stones. Jacob's team was pretty sure they were an isolated incident caused by the combination of meds and treatment he was getting for the infantile spasms, but they are doctors so of course someone wrote something along the lines of... "follow up with repeat ultrasound in one year" on his records. So we did. Jacob did great and NO kidney stones. Yay! Little kidneys are all good. Isolated incident confirmed.

STOMACH: Check!

Then there is GI which is not that exciting. Except to say Jacob is growing, growing, growing. His weight and height seem great. The doctor was very happy to see how healthy he was. We had some conversations about feeding clinics (learning how to eat), adjustment of reflux meds, and some other conversations about calorie adjustments as he gets bigger. More to come on that....

EYES: Check!

Jacob has eye appts now every 6 months. Today was the eye appointment. Jacob was a little champ and patiently let the doctor do his thing. Results - all good and he still does not need glasses. Happy. Happy.

In summary - all good appointments!!

...not to mention another spiffy haircut!

One tired pup....

The last post may have mentioned Jacob's therapists were on spring break last week. Spring break lasted through Tuesday this week (don't ask - I can't explain this) and it resulted in the attempt to squeeze in all his therapy yesterday and today. This morning he had OT, PT, *and* Speech. Whew!

Most of which he was very excited about and had a fun time.

Still. Lots of work for a little man all in one morning. And before Em was able to finish feeding him.... well...
